The South Fayette School District Employee Wellness Program is was a collaboration between South Fayette, Highmark and the Allegheny County School Health Insurance Consortium realizing that having healthy employees is a benefit to the organization, South Fayette embraces this opportunity.
Three SF employees attended the 2 day Wellness College in the summer of 2004 to learn how to develop an employee wellness program. During this 2 day event, the participants created a district wellness mission statement and wellness goals. The Chairperson, Dr. Nanci A. Sullivan and the Co-Chair, Mrs. Deborah Heal formed a wellness committee after the Wellness College representing each building, department and/or position in the district. This committee meets approximately once a month to discuss employee’s needs and tailoring wellness activities and programs to meet those needs.
SF kicked off the school year with the first staff development day devoted to wellness. The keynote speaker , was a cardiologist (Dr. Brad Pifalo , is a cardiologist ) and Vice-President a VP of Highmark. All employees were treated to a healthy luncheon. Employees All employees were asked to complete the Highmark Personal Wellness Profile . s. Staff attended mini-sessions in the afternoon that dealt with the following topics: Healthy Eating, Cardiovascular Exercise, Stretching and Strength Training, How to Reduce Stress, and an Orientation orientation to the Fitness Center fitness center.
In November , the employees were offered health screenings in the early morning as part of their staff development day. at school. These included glucose, cholesterol, and blood pressure. The results of these tests were added to each employee’s Personal Wellness Profile.
Highmark provided South Fayette School District with data from the Personal Wellness Profiles, and that data was used to determine the nutrition and fitness programs that would be offered to the employees. A nutrition program and a 12- week walking program called the “10,000 Step Program” were offered the second semester of the school year. A raffle with donations made from local businesses was held the first week of June for employees who participated in the “10,000 Step Program”.
Five employees will be attending the Wellness College on June 20 and 21, 2005 to prepare for the next school year’s wellness activities for the district. South Fayette’s Wellness Program has been recognized as an exemplary model by the Allegheny County Health Consortium. . South Fayette School District was one of seven school districts in Allegheny County that was named as an exemplary district for its employee wellness program.
