South Fayette Alumnus Named State AP Scholar
South Fayette Township, PA – South Fayette alumnus Kaiting Chen (Class of 2007) was selected to receive the State AP Scholar Award, an honor given to one male and one female student in each U.S. state and the District of Columbia with grades of 3 or higher on the greatest number of AP Exams and then the highest average grade (at least 3.5) on all AP Exams taken.
During his senior year at South Fayette, Chen was named as one of 2,500 distinguished high school seniors from across the United States to receive the $2,500 National Merit Scholarship from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). These Merit Scholar designees were chosen from a talent pool of approximately 15,000 Finalists in the 2007 National Merit Scholarship Program.
The scholarship winners are the Finalists in each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies. They were selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors.
Chen was selected based on his academic record, including difficulty level of subjects studied and grades earned; scores from two standardized tests; contributions and leadership in school and community activities; an essay describing interests and goals; and the recommendation written by a high school official.
Chen is currently a freshman at Duke University.
