High School News

Notes for Graduation Practice

1. Commencement begins at 7 p.m. The ceremony is extremely formal. This is the culmination of 13 years of education and is just as much a ceremony for your families as it is for you. Make them proud!

2. Commencement will be at the Stadium unless rain is threatening or it is very hot. In those events, it is in the Theatre. Tickets are NOT needed for the stadium. They ARE needed for the Theatre. Specifics regarding tickets and extra friends and family: see #8 below. We will decide by 4 p.m. on Friday (at the latest) if it is inside. Call main school line and it will be on the greeting by 4 p.m.

3. Students need to report to their “graduation homerooms” 6:15 p.m. Will pass out homeroom list with tickets at the end of practice. If the ceremony is indoors, you are reporting to the high school, and the “graduation homerooms” are in the AA wing. If the ceremony is outdoors, you are reporting to the middle school, and the “graduation homerooms” are in the new addition. Enter the middle school in the back of the building near the stadium/softball field area. At the end of the ceremony, you will report back to your “graduation homerooms” to pick up your diplomas and awards envelopes (if you have one). Teachers will be in the homerooms for 15 MINUTES after the ceremony ends to pass out your things. After that, pick up is on Monday.

4. Parking is available at the stadium, elementary, and middle school lots, as well as all high school lots. Parking attendants will be on hand to direct parking that evening. A shuttle will run continuously from 5:45 p.m. until the end of the evening from the more remote areas to the Theatre doors and back to the parking lots.

5. Some students have not yet picked up their cap and gown! Bring with you: Cap and gown (pressed – bring on hanger), tassel, honor cords, bobby pins to hold hat on head. Girls – NO COLLARS or TABS!! There are to be no markings of any kind on the cap and gown. Nothing may be worn with the cap and gown except for the South Fayette honor cord.

6. Dress is FORMAL ATTIRE.

• Gentlemen: dress slacks, shirt and tie, dress shoes. NO t-shirts, jeans, shorts, bare feet in sandals, tennis shoes, sunglasses, or any other informal wear. Students wearing these items will not be permitted to participate in the ceremony.
• Ladies: dress or dress slacks with jacket or nice top. Recommended: something light colored because of the white graduation gown that will show dark colors through it. NO t-shirts, jeans, shorts, bare feet in sandals, tennis shoes, sunglasses, or any other informal wear. Students wearing these items will not be permitted to participate in the ceremony. NOTHING THAT LOOKS LIKE FLIP-FLOPS!!

7. Behavior – This is a formal ceremony. Consider your family and friends who are here to watch you. There are to be no distractions of any kind. We will have you removed so that others may enjoy the ceremony. Diplomas will not be in cases. Any distractions will lead to you not receiving your diploma that evening but instead receiving it after consequences are issued.

8. Obligations must be taken care of by 11 a.m. on Friday. Otherwise, your diploma will not be in its case. I will read the list of obligations right before the morning break.

9. Tickets – Everyone will receive 6 tickets. They are NOT assigned seats – first come, first served. Doors open at 6 p.m., both for the simulcast video feed (Rooms AB221 and AB222) and for the Theatre. No tickets are needed for the rooms with the video feed – all are welcome!! Everyone age 4 and older must have a ticket to enter the Theatre. Toddlers 3 and under do not need a ticket but MUST sit on someone’s lap. ALL GUESTS must enter through the FRONT DOORS. Everyone must turn in their ticket at the front door to enter. If someone needs to exit, he or she MUST exit through the SIDE DOORS. They will receive one ticket on their way out and must re-enter through the FRONT DOORS. Inside the Theatre, guests are asked to move to the center of the rows and fill every available seat. There are no extra seats, so every seat must be filled in order for everyone to have a seat for the ceremony. Marshalls will be inside directing people to fill in the rows.

10. There will be a photographer here taking your picture individually as you receive your diploma. Photos can be ordered on-line and will be delivered within a few weeks.
