South Fayette Township School District

Ones to Watch

Alyssa DeYoung says that she doesn’t consider herself a leader, but she does like to take charge and can’t stand it when a job isn’t completed.  Her choice of activities proves this without a doubt.  Alyssa, a senior at South Fayette, is chair of the Student Advocacy Committee of South Fayette High School’s Student Government.  As chair, she collects suggestions from students on how to make the school the best it can be and presents them to the high school principal.  This is done once a month during a lunchtime meeting of six to eight Student Government members along with the building administrators.

Along with being chair of the Student Advocacy Committee, Alyssa is an active member of several clubs and organizations and is on the senior class council.  She has a full schedule of four advanced placement classes along with theater arts and band.  In the band, she plays the saxophone while marching and the oboe during concert season.  Last year, her talent took her to District and Region band, elite groups that require an audition.  This year she plans to play in WACA (Western Allegheny County Area) band.

Alyssa is also a member of the Photography Club and National Honor Society, and she participated in the Fayette Follies this year.  She played on the volleyball team her first three years of high school as a setter for two years and a defensive specialist her junior year.  This year, she ran summer track and is starting winter track.

After graduation, Alyssa plans to attend a four year university to major in engineering.  She has been accepted to Penn State and Purdue and is waiting for other responses.  Even though she may not be looking for a career in which she can specifically be a leader, opportunities will surely present themselves for Alyssa to find a job that needs to be done, and she will surely step up to lead.
