South Fayette athletics saw the continuation of the dominance
of South Fayette’s golf team and the emergence of
a new dynasty with the accomplishments of the swimming team.
No matter the record, South Fayette athletes bring pride
to our school with their outstanding sportsmanship and dedication
to their sport.
The South Fayette Golf Team, coached by Joe Cochran and
Kent Nichols, once again completed their season undefeated
in section play and with the title of WPIAL Division II
Golf Champions. Jim Markowitz, Matt Sampson and Ryan Castanet
qualified to compete in the PIAA Championship, where Markowitz
tied for 6th place as the top area golfer.

Team finished their season as Section I - Class AA Boys
Swimming Champions. This was the first section title the
boys have ever won since the inception of swimming at South
Fayette in 1992.
The Boys’ Soccer Team also earned the title of Section
Champions in 2003. Coach Mark Kuglar, Sr. was also named
Section Coach of the Year for his outstanding efforts.
South Fayette’s 7th grade Boys Basketball Team earned
the title of 2004 Southwest Conference 7th grade Boys Basketball
Champions. The team ended the season with a perfect record
of 18-0, under the guidance of coach Dan Henry.
On April 7th, the Lions’ Varsity Baseball Team took
the field for the first time in the new stadium located
behind the high school. Prior to the first pitch by retiring
head coach John Metro, a ribbon cutting ceremony was held.
That day, senior Caleb Drake earned his spot in school history
by getting the first hit in the new stadium. Later in the
season, senior Josh Willison also recorded the first home
run – a grand slam.
Among the individual accomplishments that marked the year
was swimmer Rachel Kurta, 9th grade, who broke the South
Fayette school record for the 100 yard backstroke in January
with a time of 103.15. The previous record was 103.29. Diver
Luke Morgan placed sixth in the WPIAL Diving Finals at Pine
Richland High School in February, earning a place at the
PIAA Diving Finals.
Senior Jocelyn Tillar also set a record for the girls’
varsity soccer program when she recorded her 19th career
shutout - a new South Fayette School District record. Lauren
Uranker also reached a major milestone in her basketball
career by scoring her 1000th point in the home game against
Sto-Rox.
Junior wrestler Adam McKnight took 1st place in the 275
lb weight classification (heavyweight) at the WPIAL Class
“AAA” Section 6 Wresting Tournament. Adam then
took 1st place in the same weight classification at the
Class AAA WPIAL/Southwest Regional Tournament qualifying
him to go onto the State competition.
