The primary responsibilities of the school counselor fall into three main areas: counseling, coordinating and consulting.
Counseling
Counseling services are offered to all students both individually and in groups. These services are designed to address the academic, social, emotional, and developmental needs of students. The counselor also makes classroom and by-grade-level presentations to inform and assist students with planning their academic courses for the following school year.
Coordination
Counselors coordinate a variety of special programs within their schools. These may include registration, peer helper and conflict mediation programs, long-term educational program planning, and guiding students in their prospective career choices and other decision-making plans for the future. In addition, the school counselor is responsible for the scheduling and placement of middle school students, coordinating the administration of all standardized tests, and distribution and accuracy of all grade reports.
Consultation
An important part of the school counselor's role is consultation. Counselors may consult with parents, faculty, other school staff, and community agencies in order to best meet the individual needs of all students. Some of the more common consultation roles for a counselor include: facilitating teacher-parent conferences, test interpretation, working with outside support agencies and private medical doctors to deliver necessary treatment programs, and meeting with students and/or parents to develop academic and career plans.

Social Workers
Ms.
Tammy Perry of Family Links ( http://groups.msn.com/FamilyLinksSchoolBasedPrevention/yourwebpage.msnw)
South Fayette Township School District offers support services, free of charge, to students and families so that we may provide the best environment for optimal education and learning. Our goal is that our school may work as a team, in conjunction with your family, to collaboratively make decisions that will support your son/daughter in achieving effective and desired goals.
As part of this process, South Fayette Middle School works with different support service providers, who in addition to the guidance counselor, can meet with students to discuss different life events, provide advice, offer explanation to many of the challenges that middle school children face. Events such as the loss of a family member, the separation of parents, or numerous peer related issues are just a few of the events that some middle school children experience that present a barrier to their education.
To learn more about the different services that our social workers provide, please contact Mr. Perrott in the guidance office.
