The second grade program provides students with an opportunity to develop and broaden their basic skills in reading, writing and mathematics.

At this grade level, students build on the basics and expand their skills and knowledge through special projects and class assignments.

Students are expected to accomplish the assigned work and be able to demonstrate the basic skills taught in all subject areas.

Subjects taught every day:

¨      Language Arts with an emphasis on reading, grammar, writing, spelling, phonics, speaking, and listening

¨      Mathematics including problem solving skills

Safety and nutrition are topics addressed in Health.  Changes in water, life cycle of the painted lady butterfly, and the solar system are topics addressed in Science.

Social Studies highlight rules and laws, map skills, community and the environment (past and present).

Slant printing is introduced as a transition into cursive writing which in developed.

Special subjects include Art, Music, Physical Education, and Library Skills are taught once a week.

In first grade, students are assigned to one of three foreign languages (German, French, and Spanish) and receive instruction on a four-day rotation.  Second grade students continue studying with the same language through fourth grade.

If students are to benefit from their school experience, learning becomes a shared responsibility between the student, the parent, and the teacher.  The South Fayette Township School District staff has identified key expectations that need to take place if we are to improve student achievement.

A variety of methods will be used to evaluate each student's work in the classroom.  Several methods include:

¨      Math quizzes and chapter tests

¨      Language Arts unit tests

¨      Day 4 comprehension and vocabulary quizzes

¨      Grammar quizzes

¨      Rubrics for writing in Language Arts and Math

At the beginning of each year, teachers will provide students with specific criteria for evaluation.
