WHAT IS REFLECTIONS?

Reflections is an annual (preschool- grade 12) arts recognition and achievement program that gives students the opportunity to express themselves creatively.  This year’s theme is “I Can Make a Difference”.  All students are encouraged to participate by exploring their thoughts and feelings and creating art that reflects the theme.  Although the Reflections program follows a “contest” format, winning is not the emphasis.  Rather, participation in and appreciation for the arts is the Reflections program’s goal.

See examples of past Reflections project winners by visiting www.pta.org/reflections.

HOW CAN MY STUDENT PARTICIPATE?

Download the National PTA guidelines/rules and Official Entry Form from the links above or pick up printed copies in the school office.  Read and review the information carefully with your child, and then let him/her create!  (No project help from parents or other students is allowed, unless the child has a language barrier or physical challenge.  See rules for more details.)  The firm deadline for entries is November 2, 2007 in the elementary office.

ALL RULES MUST BE FOLLOWED CAREFULLY TO ENSURE ELIGIBILITY AND A COMPLETED, SIGNED OFFICIAL ENTRY FORM MUST ACCOMPANY EACH ENTRY.

HOW ARE PROJECTS JUDGED?

Projects are judged BLINDLY and IMPARTIALLY by local professionals/artists in the four art categories (none are from South Fayette Elementary).  The only information made available to judges is the project title and optional artist statement.  Judging of projects at all levels is based on evidence of artistic ability and relevance to the theme.

FINALISTS

The top five finalists in each category and age division from South Fayette Elementary will be awarded prizes ($10 Target gift cards) and will be recognized in school and in the printed weekly announcements and PTA newsletter.  These finalists’ projects will then move forward to the PTA council level of judging.  Winners at subsequent levels will also be recognized.  (If students do not place in the top five at any level, their projects are returned to the SFEPTA and kept for display at the art fair in the spring.)

LEVELS OF JUDGING

At each level of judging (except the national level), the top five finalists from each category and age division move on to the next level of judging as follows:

Local level (South Fayette Elementary)

Council level (Local schools)

Regional level (Allegheny County)

State level (Pennsylvania)

National level (the whole USA!)

South Fayette Elementary has had students compete (and win!) as high as the state level.
