Drug
Abuse Resistance Education
"DARE to keep kids off drugs!"
D.A.R.E.
is a comprehensive drug and violence prevention
education program that equips students with
the skills they need to avoid involvement
in drugs, gangs, and violence. The seventeen
lessons, taught by a specially trained officer,
offer a variety of interactive, role playing
and cooperative learning activities which
are designed to encourage students to solve
problems. The program begins by strengthening
the self esteem of the fifth grade students.
Students are taught to recognize dangerous
situations as well as strategies to to safely
get out of such situations. Students learn
to
recognize and resist the peer pressures
that cause them to experiment with drugs,
tobacco, and alcohol. D.A.R.E.
teaches kids how to be assertive and to
deal with peer pressure by saying no effectively.
Students learn about the dangers of drugs
and gain self-confidence through role-playing.
They also add learned vocabulary to their
DARE workbook and complete exercises in
the workbook to reinforce the lesson taught
in class.
As
culminating activities the students write
a paper
titled "Taking a Stand" which is a personal promise
not to use drugs and perform a skit demonstrating
some of the skills learned in DARE. The finale
is DARE graduation where the students get a certificate
and a T-shirt. The winning DARE essays are read
by the authors and the skits are performed. Students
end the DARE program by enjoying a pizza party.
D.A.R.E.
is a collaborative effort between the police department,
school, parents, and community leaders.
