The
Coretta Scott King Award, established in 1969,
was created in memory of Dr. Martin Luther King,
Jr. and in honor of his wife, Mrs. Coretta Scott
King. The award is given to one African-American
author and one African-American illustrator whose
books promote the ideas of world peace and the
American Dream.
