Volunteer for Generations Together
Dear South Fayette Community Member,

The success of our school district has its foundation in the strength of our community. We are fortunate to welcome a student body from a broad spectrum of cultural, educational, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Our residents bring diversity and a knowledge base to our community that, as a school, we want to share with our learners.

At the elementary school, representing Kindergarten through second grade, we are establishing a Generations Together program with the goal of providing our youngest students with the opportunity to learn from and interact with some of our most seasoned residents. In exchange, we hope that the seniors in our community will enjoy volunteering their time with children who are eager to work and share with them. If you are not a senior citizen, but know someone who may be interested, please share this information.

What will you do as a Generations Together volunteer? You might be reading to a class, helping with crafts and classroom activities, leading special groups – it really all depends on you, your talents, and the teacher with whom you are assigned to work. An employment history in education is certainly a bonus, but by no means a requirement to participate. So what do we require?

A Generations Together volunteer must
  1. be a resident of South Fayette Township
  2. be retired or age 60+
  3. be available at least one day per week between 9 am and 3 pm
  4. provide clearances to work with children including FBI Act 114, PA State Criminal Act 34, and PA Child Abuse Act 151 (all must be dated within the past 60 months)
  5. provide tuberculin test results dated within the past three months if planning to be in the classroom 10+ hours per week (more than one day per week of volunteering)

If you’re not sure how to obtain the required clearances, we can help. An information session will be held on Wednesday, January 31, 2024, where we can answer your questions about the program and support you in starting the clearance process online.

Please join us. The information session on January 31 will be at the Elementary School (3620 Old Oakdale Road, McDonald, PA 15057) in the Art Room from 1:45 - 2:45 pm. If you think you’d like to participate, please complete an online form found by clicking here to tell us a bit about yourself and why you’d like to volunteer with our youngest learners at South Fayette.

We’re looking forward to meeting you and know that our students will be even more excited to welcome you into their classrooms!

With appreciation,
