Advanced Placement (AP)

The Advanced Placement Program offers college-level courses and exams that you can take in high school.

Advanced Placement: The opportunity for students in high school to take college level courses and secure advanced placement or college credit for their efforts by applying for score consideration to the college/university they choose to attend after graduation.

Difference between Honors and AP: pacing, amount of reading/work outside of school, amount/level of writing, more content/greater depth, discussion, participation, class culture

Expectations: learn information at a quicker rate, develop effective study skills, read extensively and do research at the college level, complete work independently, work in groups to study/process information, come to class prepared for discussion/work, manage time to accommodate activities and school work

Attributes of Successful AP Students: curiosity, motivation, work ethic, initiative, responsibility, organization, time management skills

The AP Exam: Each course has a corresponding exam that is administered in May. AP exams represent the culmination of AP courses and are an integral part of the program. It is the expectation that all students enrolled in AP courses at SFHS will take the exam. Payment ($94 per exam) is the responsibility of the family.
