Curriculum

The curriculum at the South Fayette Township School District goes beyond the standards set forth by the state. Our curriculum lays a foundation for our students to achieve the knowledge, skills and dispositions needed for tomorrow through unique and varied learning experiences from Kindergarten through 12th grade.  We believe that our curriculum needs to be comprehensive and balanced in order to meet the needs of every learner every day.

South Fayette Township School District is known for its “Tradition, Pride & Excellence,” a reputation earned through consistent commitment to best practices in literacy and numeracy, supportive parents and community, thriving student body, talented professional teaching staff, research and data informed instructional practices and assessments that measure both growth and achievement. Our pioneering integration of computational thinking throughout all grade levels provides additional skills for future readiness.

Elementary School: South Fayette Township Elementary School provides students with a strong academic foundation while taking into consideration individual differences. The elementary curriculum focuses deeply on developing strong foundations with literacy emphasizing reading, grammar, writing, spelling, phonics, speaking and listening.  At this level, the math curriculum focuses on helping students develop a strong number sense through a hands-on problem-based approach to mathematics instruction.  The curriculum provides opportunities for students to explore unique ideas and interests through science, social studies and STEAM experiences throughout the school year. All children have the opportunity to achieve academically, enjoy exposure to the fine arts through visual art, choral music, and music appreciation, improve their physical fitness, and gross motor skills in physical education, and enhance their research and reading skills through the library.

Grade level curriculum booklets are available on the elementary website. This provides more detail about the specific curriculum at each grade level.

Intermediate School: South Fayette Township Intermediate School builds on the strong academic foundation started at the Elementary School while continuing to take into consideration individual differences and age-appropriate development. In literacy, the curriculum continues to emphasize the areas of reading, grammar, writing, spelling, phonics, speaking and listening as students develop more complex skills in all of these areas.  With greater knowledge of reading fundamentals, Intermediate School students work to develop their inferential thinking and text analysis skills while grappling with texts of various genres and structures.  In mathematics, problem solving through the application of basic skills while continuing to develop number sense are critical components in these grade levels.  Science and social studies explore various topics with a hands-on, inquiry-based approach, often integrated into the project-based STEAM curriculum.  Additionally, students in the Intermediate School develop a stronger understanding of computational thinking through technology literacy and STEAM courses applying their skills in real-world learning situations.  All children have the opportunity to achieve academically, enjoy exposure to the fine arts through visual art, choral music and music appreciation, improve their physical fitness and gross motor skills in physical education, and enhance their research and reading skills through the library.
