Curriculum Overview

Instructional Program

The kindergarten program provides students with an opportunity to learn basic academic skills in reading, writing, and mathematics.  In addition, the students develop social skills through creative activities, learning centers, art projects, and music.  Report cards are provided at the conclusion of each nine-week marking period.  Parent conferences are held in the fall, but parents may arrange a conference anytime during the school year.

At the beginning of each session, students recite The Pledge of Allegiance, sing the school and patriotic songs, and participate in calendar and daily activities.

Subjects taught daily:
  • Language Arts
  • Mathematics
  • Social Studies, Science, Handwriting, and Health are also integrated into the Reading program.

Language Arts/Reading/Writing

  • Identify and print capital and lowercase letters
  • Recognize consonant letter sounds…beginning, middle, and ending
  • Identify and sound out short vowel words
  • Blend sounds to make words
  • Read decodable books
  • Read 42 sight words and create rhyming words
  • Identify opposites
  • Explain cause and effect
  • Draw conclusions
  • Distinguish between real and make believe
  • Identify story details (plot, setting, characters, main idea)
  • Classify nouns, verbs, and adjectives
  • Recognize statements, questions, and exclamation sentences
  • Write sentences beginning with a capital letter
  • End sentences with a punctuation mark
  • Show proper spacing between words

Mathematics

  • Copy, create, and extend patterns
  • Create, read, and interpret a graph
  • Identify sets
  • Solve story problems using manipulatives
  • Sort objects by color, shape, size, taller, shorter, heavier, and lighter
  • Identify and write shapes (circle, square, triangle, rectangle, hexagon, cone, cylinder ,and sphere)
  • Identify coins (pennies, nickels, dimes)
  • Count to 100 by 1’s, 5’s, and 10’s
  • Compare lengths
  • Identify ordinal positions
  • Add and subtract numbers within 10
  • Measure using nonstandard units
  • Compare objects; more, fewer, and same
  • Identify, write and count objects to 20
  • Represent two-digit number using 10's and 1's

Social Studies

  • Recognize the role of community helpers
  •  Describe personal traits in a book titled “All About Me”
  •  Describe the members of the family
  •  Recite phone number, address, and birthday
  •  Discuss traditions of holidays using art projects, songs, stories, and activity packets. 

Explore Time

Explore time is an opportunity for the kindergarten students to further develop their emotional, social, and physical development. Explore time will be supervised by our elementary student monitors.  

Student Expectations 

  • Complete all homework assignments
  • Bring all required materials to class
  • Participate in class discussions
  • Follow classroom rules
  • Respect the rights of others
  • Read for fun

Parent Expectations 

  • Provide a quiet place for your child to do homework or study
  • Establish time for homework and review the assignments to see if they are complete
  • Read to your child every night
  • Communicate with the school on a regular basis
  • Emphasize the importance of education to your child

Teacher Expectations

  • Provide instruction to meet various learning styles of students
  •  Communicate with parents on a regular basis
  •  Provide feedback on assignments
  •  Provide a nurturing and caring classroom environment with high academic expectations

Assessments
A variety of methods will be used to assess each student’s work in the classroom.  Several methods include:  teacher observations, oral assessments, questions/answer, and writing samples.
