Curriculum Overview

The second grade program provides students with an opportunity to develop and broaden their basic skills in reading, writing and mathematics.

At this grade level, students build on the basics and expand their skills and knowledge through special projects and class assignments.

Students are expected to accomplish the assigned work and be able to demonstrate the basic skills taught in all subject areas.

Subjects taught every day:

• Language Arts with an emphasis on reading, grammar, writing, spelling, and phonics
• Mathematics including problem solving skills

Changes in Matter, Life Cycle of the Butterfly, Dinosaurs, and the Solar System are topics addressed in Science.

Social Studies addresses rules and laws, map skills, past and present, geography, and economics

Slant print is taught to prepare students for cursive writing.

Special subjects include Art, Music, Arts Alive, Physical Education, and Library.

A Shared Responsibility

If students are to benefit from their school experience, learning becomes a shared responsibility between the student, the parent, and the teacher. The South Fayette Township School District staff has identified key expectations that need to take place if we are to improve student achievement.

Student Expectations

• Complete all homework assignments
• Bring all required materials to class
• Participate in class discussions
• Follow classroom rules
• Respect the rights of others
• Read for fun

Parent Expectations

• Review and sign agenda nightly
• Encourage your child to read to you 
• Provide a quiet place for the child to do homework or study
• Establish time for homework and review the assignments to see if they are complete
• Read to your child and model appropriate fluency
• Communicate with the school on a regular basis

Teacher Expectations

• Prove instruction to meet various learning styles of students
• Communicate with parents on a regular basis
• Provide feedback on assignments

Evaluations

A variety of methods will be used to evaluate each student’s work in the classroom. Several methods include:

• Math quizzes and chapter tests
• Language Arts unit tests
• Day 4 comprehension and vocabulary quizzes
• Grammar and word analysis quizzes
• Rubrics for writing in Language Arts

Social Studies

• Explain why rules and laws protect us and keep us safe.
• Describe ways we learn about the past.
• Locate specific objects on a map by using the map key.
• Recognize the Earth’s different features.

Science

• Identify changes in physical systems.
• Recognize stages in the life cycle of the butterfly
• Use elements of scientific inquiry
• Locate and describe the planets in the solar system.
