District Monitoring Winter Weather Forecast

This message was shared with families via email on Tuesday, January 24, 2023:

The South Fayette Township School District is closely monitoring the forecasted winter weather expected to impact our region over the next 24-36 hours. This system may pose some unique challenges due to the onset time (snow is forecasted to begin around 4 AM) and the predicted transition to sleet and/or freezing rain, then to rain in the afternoon. At this time, there has been no change made to district operations for Wednesday, January 25, 2023. With such a quiet, mild start to the winter, we want to take this opportunity to remind you of the inclement weather procedures first shared with you in November 2022.

Any change in district operations will be announced on the District’s website, as a recorded message on the school district’s main phone line, and sent as a message to families through School Messenger. This information will also be shared with WPXI, WTAE, and KDKA.

In the event of a two-hour delay, both morning and afternoon kindergarten will be in session and will follow a modified schedule. Morning kindergarten students will be picked up in the morning two hours later than their scheduled time and will arrive home one hour later than scheduled. Afternoon kindergarten students will be picked up one hour later than scheduled and will arrive home at their regularly scheduled time.

As a reminder, the South Fayette Township School District is approved to use Virtual Learning Days to count for a day of school when weather, an emergency, or other event prevents students from attending school in the buildings. A Virtual Learning Day does not need to be made up like a traditional snow cancellation day.

When the District has a Virtual Learning Day, students will be expected to attend virtual instruction using their school-issued devices. To provide all families with the opportunity to take the necessary measures to prepare for virtual instruction and arrange childcare coverage, all schools will operate on a Two-Hour Delay Schedule on Virtual Learning Days. These are the virtual start times by grade levels.

  • 9-12 students will begin their day at 9:20 AM on a Virtual Learning Day.
  • 6-8 students will begin their day at 10:10 AM on a Virtual Learning Day.
  • 1-5 students will begin their day at 11:00 AM on a Virtual Learning Day.
  • AM Kindergarten will begin their day at 11:00 AM and end their day at 12:39 PM on a Virtual Learning Day.
  • PM Kindergarten will begin their day at 1:44 PM and end their day at 3:23 PM on a Virtual Learning Day.
  • Little Lions Academy will not be in session on a Virtual Learning Day. Students and parents can complete work in their School Weather Closure Packets.
Students have been instructed throughout the school year on how Canvas, our learning management system, will be used to access assignments, resources, and live meetings on Virtual Learning Days.

Additional building-specific procedures regarding attendance and schedules will be communicated with you by your child’s building principal on a Virtual Learning Day.

The decision to delay classes or transition to a Virtual Learning Day is one district administrators take very seriously. The safety of our students, educators, and staff will always be our priority.

If you have any questions, please contact your child’s teacher or building principal.
